RENO, Nev. (AP) - A new project has closed the Virginia Street Bridge in downtown Reno.

KOLO-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1FoXMfP ) the bridge will be closed Monday as part of a new project to replace the 100-year-old bridge.

The plan is to build a new bridge that won’t touch down on the riverbed, which will increase the water flow in the case of a flood.

The construction company is doing site preparations and is expected to remove roadway materials, excavate portions of the roadway and start removals of floodwalls.

The demolition of the south span of the bridge is scheduled for the week of June 8.

Access to businesses will be provided during construction, but several parking lanes may be closed and metered parking will not be available.
