SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) - A teenage cousin of an 8-year-old boy injured by a shotgun blast to the chest has been charged with a misdemeanor in the western Ohio shooting.

Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly says the 17-year-old boy was charged Tuesday as a juvenile with negligent assault and was in detention pending a juvenile court hearing. It couldn’t immediately be determined whether he has an attorney.

The sheriff says the child shot Friday at his grandparents’ Springfield Township home was in stable condition Tuesday.

Kelly says authorities aren’t sure what caused the shotgun to go off while in the teen’s possession. The sheriff says the teen was the oldest of five boys alone at their grandparents’ house at the time. The boys are all related and range in age from 8 to 17.
