CNN is using the Confederate flag issue to press Republican presidentail candidates on — gay rights?

On Wednesday morning, CNN “New Day” anchor Chris Cuomo conducted an uncomfortable — and odd — interview with GOP candidate Ben Carson. At one point, Cuomo conflated the Confederate flag and the pro-gay rainbow flag with a bizarre hypothetical question.

“Let me hold you to your own test here,” Cuomo said to Carson. “Many people are equating what the confederate flag stands for with the gay pride flag and saying, ‘Hey, that flag should be taken down, too, because all it represents is hatred towards Christians and people who don’t favor gay rights.’ Do you see an equation between those two symbols?”

Carson, a world famous neurosurgeon who had come on the show to talk about issues relevant to his presidential run, said: “I decided that I really wanted to talk about the Confederate flag during this time.”

That was Chris “Gotcha” Cuomo’s cue to pounce. “But you just said, doctor, that you cannot avoid these difficult situations because that’s how they fester, you must deal with what is difficult to deal with, that’s part of leadership. You just said that about the other issue.”

“Like I said, If you want to talk about that, let’s do that on a different segment,” Carson said.

“So, the discomfort of that conversation you feel distracts from the Confederate flag, or it’s just not something you want to handle?” a smiling Cuomo asked.
