GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - District Attorney Pete Hautzinger is planning to leave his job this fall to become the U.S. Attorney’s Office branch chief in Grand Junction.

The Daily Sentinel reports (https://bit.ly/1LBrBxL) Hautzinger must pass a background check before resigning from his current job in Grand Junction, likely in August, and taking over as the federal office’s top prosecutor.

Gov. John Hickenlooper will appoint a replacement and voters will elect a new district attorney in November.

Hautzinger was elected in 2004 and is in the third year of a final term that expires in January 2017.

Grand Junction is currently without a federal prosecutor. Those cases are being handled in Durango and Denver.
