MILFORD, Conn. (AP) - A 23-year-old man from Orange, Connecticut, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the slaying of his mother last year.

The New Haven Register reports (https://bit.ly/1dtlyQ4) Timothy Granata answered clearly when Judge John ronan asked questions about his defense during the brief proceedings Monday.

Granata is charged with murder in the beating death of 58-year-old Dr. Claudia Granata at their home in July 2014. Police said she had been struck on her head, neck, torso and extremities with blunt and sharp objects.

Granata has chosen to have his case heard by a three-judge panel rather than a jury.

Prosecutor Cornelius Kelly will review the defense’s mental health reports with a psychiatrist before the next court hearing Aug. 10.
