GREECE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a police officer was being dragged by a car in a suburban Rochester parking lot when he fatally shot an armed passenger police had been seeking to check on his welfare.

Town of Greece police released more details Tuesday on Monday afternoon’s shooting outside the Mall at Greece Ridge.

Officials say says a friend of 23-year-old Joseph Ladd had reported that Ladd was making suicidal threats. Officer Eric Hughes spotted a car Ladd was riding in and stopped it in the lot.

While Hughes talked to Ladd, he noticed an ammunition clip in Ladd’s pocket. Hughes called for backup, then said Ladd was reaching for his waistband.

As the driver pulled away with Hughes leaning into the car, the officer shot Ladd twice. Police say Ladd was armed with a 9 mm handgun.
