AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Part of U.S. Route 224 in northeast Ohio is being dedicated to the memory of an Akron policeman who was fatally shot after trying to get an unruly customer out of a pub.

Relatives of Justin Winebrenner are expected to attend the road-naming ceremony planned Thursday evening at Akron City Council chambers. Local and state officials also are expected to be there.

The 32-year-old officer was shot in November during a struggle with a man later charged in his death.

Police say the man became unruly and was asked to leave Papa Don’s Pub in Akron, then returned with a gun and shot Winebrenner, who was unarmed.

The state legislature passed a bill renaming the road in the last General Assembly.

A sign on U.S. 224 will be erected Thursday.
