PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a 22-year-old Warrenton, Oregon, man accused of planting a fake bomb on a Dutch airliner in 2014 has been arrested.
A two-count federal indictment accuses Sean Michael Davies of constructing what appeared to be a bomb, then hiding it in the restroom of a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines plane flying between Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Kilimanjaro and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. He’s also accused of falsely telling the flight crew he had discovered the device. That caused the Oct. 20, 2014, flight to be diverted to Cairo, Egypt.
Davies appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate John Acosta, who set trial for Sept. 1. Davies is a U.S. citizen.
It was not known late Tuesday whether he had a lawyer.
The FBI investigated the case with the aid of Dutch authorities.
