Army Secretary John McHugh will leave his post as the Army’s top civilian later this year, the Defense Department said Monday.

Mr. McHugh, who has served as the Army secretary since 2009, will
leave office no later than Nov. 1 to leave plenty of time to name a
successor and ensure a smooth transition.

“Secretary McHugh has been a tremendous public servant for decades, and he has helped lead the Army through a period of challenge and change,” Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said.

Prior to serving as secretary of the Army, Mr. McHugh was a Republican member of Congress from New York’s 24th district.
