RUPERT, Vt. (AP) - Vermont state police say a homeowner narrowly escaped injury when a speeding driver crashed into a home in Rupert.

Police say a trooper was pursuing a car driven by 19-year-old Elias Rushing of Dorset, Vermont to issue a speeding citation when Rushing lost control of his car on Route 315 and crashed through a fence and then into the house.

Authorities say the car narrowly missed the homeowner, who was sitting in a chair near the point of impact.

Police say Rushing fled the scene on foot, but returned 45 minutes later.

He was issued a citation to appear in Bennington District Court April 6 for attempting to elude, leaving the scene of an accident and negligent operation.

Police say the house was extensively damaged in Saturday afternoon crash.
