ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Elko County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a man on DUI and child abuse charges after he was stopped while driving the wrong way on U.S. Interstate 80 with two young children in the back seat.

Undersheriff Clair Morris says 27-year-old Gabriel Chavez of Elko was driving west in the eastbound lanes east of Elko about 2:40 a.m. Thursday.

Deputies pulled him over at the Deeth/Starr Valley exit, but as they approached, he tried to speed off again.

Morris told the Elko Daily Free Press (https://tinyurl.com/l2z72u6) one deputy broke out a car window and the other pulled the patrol car in front of his vehicle so Chavez couldn’t drive any further.

Morris says state officials took the 4- and 5-year-oldinto temporary custody before turning them over to their grandmother.
