TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - A former coin dealer who raised money for Ohio Republicans before being convicted in a state investment scandal is asking the state for clemency.

The request comes after Tom Noe (NOH’-ee) dropped his appeal for a new trial in January.

The Blade (https://bit.ly/19hjutl ) newspaper in Toledo reported Friday that Noe’s attorney has filed a clemency petition with the Ohio Parole Board.

It has been seven years since Noe was convicted of stealing from a $50 million rare-coin fund he oversaw for the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation.

The scandal helped Democrats win four of five statewide elective offices in 2006.

The 60-year-old Noe is now serving an 18-year prison term and isn’t due to be released for another 11 years.
