CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire is getting an $8.6 million federal grant to provide rental assistance for people suffering from severe mental illness.
The award, to be used over five years, will help with community-based housing for up to 150 low-income people or families.
New Hampshire’s share is part of the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s funding this year of $150 million to 25 states, totaling almost 4,600 housing units. The goal is to keep people with disabilities from being unnecessarily institutionalized or potentially homeless.
Gov. Maggie Hassan said through the implementation of the state’s landmark mental health settlement in 2013, New Hampshire has worked to increase community-based housing for people with mental illness. She said the grant will help ensure that such residents also have access to community resources and support.
