PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - State senators have unanimously approved legislation outlawing the sale and use of powdered alcohol in Rhode Island.

Legislators voted Thursday to ban Palcohol, a powdered alcohol that can be mixed with water.

The bill was sponsored by Johnston Democratic Sen. Frank Lombardo III.

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved Palcohol on March 10. The manufacturer says on its website it hopes to have it available for sale by the summer.

But Lombardo says he is concerned that the product could be abused. He says the powder could technically be sold to minors because alcohol laws generally apply to liquids.

Several states are looking to ban the product.

The measure now goes to the House.
