ALLEGAN, Mich. (AP) - A children’s watchdog agency says it’s looking into whether social service workers adequately protected two children who were fatally shot in a home that was set ablaze.
The Grand Rapids Press reports (https://bit.ly/1AlfL4h ) Friday that the Office of Children’s Ombudsman has opened an investigation into the case. The bodies of 33-year-old Debra Sheppard; her 12-year-old daughter, Emma McComber; and 10-year-old son, Corey LaValley Jr., were found Tuesday in Dorr Township, southwest of Grand Rapids.
Corey LaValley was arraigned Thursday on open murder, second-degree arson and gun possession charges. Corey LaValley Jr. was LaValley’s and Sheppard’s son.
McComber’s father, William McComber, says he called Child Protective Services to report abuse of his daughter by LaValley. No records in Allegan or Kent County indicate the state had taken any action.
