BROOKHAVEN, Ga. (AP) - Brookhaven city officials say they’re preparing to welcome a Japanese diplomat for the city’s upcoming Cherry Blossom Festival.
Mayor Pro Tem and festival organizer Rebecca Chase Williams say Japanese Consul General Kazuo Sunaga will participate in the opening ceremony for the festival on March 27 at 6:30 p.m.
City officials say the cherry blossom tree is a traditional symbol of peace and good will that was adopted as Brookhaven’s official tree in April 2014. Officials say 225 cherry blossom trees have been planted in six city parks and the Brookhaven’s border on Peachtree Road.
Officials say the Mirani-Kanai Taiko Dance Company and others will perform before the opening ceremony.
The three-day festival includes a 5K run and walk, food trucks and more.
