DENVER (AP) - Gov. John Hickenlooper’s top media adviser has been arrested for suspicion of driving drunk, according to Denver Police.

KMGH-TV reported Thursday (https://goo.gl/UDZrPu ) that an officer’s police report says 43-year-old Max Potter was stopped Wednesday night for driving with his lights off. The police report says the officer smelled alcohol on Potter’s breath and that his speech was slurred and he was stumbling.

Potter refused a roadside sobriety test, police said. He was arrested and cited with suspicion of DUI, failure to display headlamps, and failure to show proof of insurance.

The governor’s office is aware of the incident, Hickenlooper spokeswoman Kathy Green said Thursday.

“We understand that Max Potter was charged late last night with suspicion of driving under the influence,” Green said in a statement. “We take this seriously and know Max will as well. This happened outside the scope of his employment and now will be handled by the judicial process.”

Potter has requested personal leave from work, Green said.

Potter also issued a statement.

“I am deeply embarrassed by this serious matter and I want to sincerely apologize to the governor, my colleagues and - most importantly - my family for letting them down,” he said. “I take full responsibility for my actions and will work to restore the trust that they have placed in me.”
