Detroit judge may lose job after panel’s recommendation

DETROIT (AP) - A judicial watchdog is recommending the removal of Detroit Judge Brenda Sanders due to mental illness.

The recommendation from the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission now goes to the Michigan Supreme Court. The commission said Friday that Brenda Sanders’ mental disability prevents her from performing her duties at 36th District Court.

Sanders was on medical leave for months before the Michigan Supreme Court suspended her without pay in September. She was re-elected in November.

Her attorney, Cyril Hall, says Sanders should be allowed to get treatment and return to work.

Besides Sanders’ mental health, the commission says she failed to cooperate with investigators. It says the evidence shows a “pattern of dishonesty.”
