YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - A federal judge has denied Yakima’s motion for reconsideration of its voting rights case with the American Civil Liberties Union.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports that U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Rice denied the motion on Thursday.

The city had asked him to review his February decision, which ordered Yakima to adopt a district-based election system for the City Council beginning this year.

The goal is to get more minority representation on the council.

The city has 30 days to decide whether it will appeal the ruling.

Yakima’s population is more than 41 percent Hispanic but no Hispanic has ever served on the City Council.
