BARRE, Vt. (AP) - A sixth grader at the Thaddeus Stevens School in Lyndonville has won Vermont’s statewide spelling bee.
Lucinda Storz’s winning word was ipecac (IPP-e-KAK), a drug used to induce vomiting derived from the roots of a South American shrub.
The Vermont Education Agency says the competition at St. Michael’s College on Thursday went 42 rounds, which is the longest ever.
Second place went to Alice Early of St. Mary’s School in Middlebury and third place to Benjamin Weinstein of Camels Hump Middle School in Richmond.
The 11-year-old Storz will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington in late May.
The competition was hosted by the Vermont Agency of Education, Vermont Principals’ Association, Vermont Humanities Council and the Times Argus/Rutland Herald.
