PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois High School Association says it will keep the boys state basketball tournament in Peoria and the girls tournament in Normal for at least the next five years.
The IHSA made the announcement Saturday, saying it has built “strong traditions in Normal and Peoria.”
The boys tournaments have been played at Peoria’s Carver Arena since 1996. The girls games have been hosted by Illinois State’s Redbird Arena in Normal since 1992.
The IHSA received competing proposals to host all or part of the boys tournaments from the State Farm Center at the University of Illinois in Champaign and the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates.
Bradley University’s Renaissance Coliseum in Peoria sought to host the girls state finals.
The new contracts will run from 2016 until 2020.
