SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr has been ordered to stand trial in a suit by a former police department lawyer who says Suhr fired her for exposing his mishandling of a domestic violence case in 2009.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1xnqvUf ) the city argued that Kelly O’Haire’s suit was unfounded because Suhr fired her as part of an overall cost-cutting when he became chief in 2011.

A Superior Court judge refused to dismiss the suit Thursday, saying a jury could conclude that Suhr had retaliated against her illegally.

O’Haire says that in 2009 she recommended Suhr be fired because he had mishandled a friend’s domestic violence complaint. Suhr was deputy police chief then.

The case could go to trial as soon as April 20.
