RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - Vermont hunters will have a chance to weigh in on moose and deer hunting proposals at a series of upcoming hearings.

Six hearings are scheduled, with the first two taking place in Barre and Bennington Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Among the more controversial proposals, according to the Rutland Herald (https://bit.ly/1Fpk1GO ), is one allows anyone 50 years or older to use a crossbow during archery season.

Currently, crossbow permits are issued only to those who present a doctor’s note saying they can’t draw back a conventional bow due to a physical disability. Nearly 6,000 permits have been issued under this provision, and some hunters grouse that some may be faking injury to gain permits.

The Fish and Wildlife Board in January voted 6-4 to permit any hunter to use a crossbow.
