GIFFORD, Ill. (AP) - Volunteers are returning to a central Illinois community damaged by a 2013 tornado to plant more trees in front of homes that have been rebuilt.
The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1Ic0yHS ) close to 200 donated trees were planted in the village of Gifford last spring. Next weekend the Champaign County Farm Bureau is returning to the village to finish the job.
Brad Uken is manager of the farm bureau. He says this year’s volunteers will target properties that were still in too bad a shape to take on a new tree last year.
Uken says he expects 150 to 160 trees will be planted in Gifford and in some rural areas in southern and northern Champaign County.
The tornado that hit Gifford in November 2013 leveled about 70 homes.
