BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. (AP) - City officials on picturesque Bainbridge Island, Washington, are dealing with a mystery. A smelly, gooey mystery.
City spokeswoman Kellie Stickney says someone is filling plastic produce bags with a gooey liquid that appears to be foul-smelling food waste, then placing those bags in paper bags and leaving them on top of trash cans.
KOMO-TV reports (https://is.gd/YXqVBm ) that animals are getting into the bags, creating a mess.
Stickney says officials are also worried about human health hazards and possible runoff into Eagle Harbor.
She says authorities don’t know exactly what the substance is - just that it “kind of resembles soup” and “has a very foul smell.”
Maintenance workers and city employees have found dozens of the bags since March 12 - at City Hall, a waterfront park, even at playgrounds.
Bainbridge Island lies west of Seattle across Puget Sound.
