COLUMBUS, N.C. (AP) - A couple from Polk County has been charged with animal cruelty after four dead alpacas and a dead llama were found among other animals on their farm earlier this month.

Area media outlets report that 43-year-old Shannon Hamby and 46-year-old David Hamby are charged with seven felony counts and 11 misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals. It was not immediately clear if they had attorneys.

Deputies received an animal welfare complaint March 5 and began an investigation after finding five dead animals and 13 live animals at the farm.

Deputies said one of the live animals was a llama that was so emaciated it had to be put to sleep.
