SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) - The Southampton Town police department has its first female lieutenant after promoting a police officer who alleged a culture of gender discrimination on the force.
Susan Ralph was among two sergeants sworn in as lieutenants on Tuesday.
The 13-year police veteran and Southampton’s 2005 officer of the year filed a federal lawsuit against the department in February. She alleged that a pattern of discrimination prevented women from being promoted to higher ranks.
The suit said that of the agency’s 100 officers only eight are women.
According to Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/1HJQc4I ), Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst said Ralph’s promotion was the result of her high score on a fall civil service exam, not the lawsuit.
