CADILLAC, Mich. (AP) - Trinity Health will retain $14 million from the Cadillac Mercy Hospital Foundation rather than transfer the money to a local organization.

The Cadillac News and the Traverse City Record-Eagle report the former owner of Mercy Hospital Cadillac will manage the funds. Moving the money to the Cadillac Area Community Foundation was requested by family of principal donor Harvey Pell.

Granddaughter Helen Lehman says they’re “gravely disappointed.”

In 2011, Harvey and Helen Pell, who already had made a $2.5 million contribution, followed up with a gift of $10 million through their will. The $14 million wasn’t included in the sale of the Cadillac hospital by Trinity to Traverse City-based Munson HealthCare.

Trinity says it “will continue to honor … Harvey Pell’s intent for the funds, acting in the hospital’s best interest.”
