SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A San Francisco man has been charged with felony animal cruelty for starving a friend’s dog to death.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/18nhtdu) Thursday 26-year-old Kun Sun pleaded not guilty to charges that he failed to take care of a Bichon Frise named Penny for a friend who had relocated to China.

The dog’s body was found in December 2013 inside a shoe box dumped in a San Francisco neighborhood.

Authorities found a microchip that contained the dog’s name, and a San Francisco address.

Officials learned the owner had given the dog to Sun six months earlier.

A necropsy of the dog revealed it had died of starvation. Authorities determined the dog had been confined and not allowed access to food for up to two weeks before it died.
