Rep. Trey Gowdy, chair of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, has reportedly canceled an appearance at a Virginia Republican Party fundraiser after he learned the event was Benghazi-themed.

The South Carolina Republican told Mediaite that he had not been aware of the fundraiser’s theme when he agreed to it.

“The chairman was unaware that organizers of this event intended to feature or even mention Benghazi,” his spokesperson said. “He has not raised money using Benghazi, and will not speak about Benghazi at fundraising events. Having been made aware of this group’s plan, he no longer will be participating in the event.”

Mr. Gowdy was scheduled to be the featured guest at the March 19 event, titled, “Beyond Benghazi.” A promotional flier showed a photo of the congressman accompanied by the hashtag #GowdyonBenghazi, National Review first reported.

Mr. Gowdy had previously stated he would refrain from fundraising off the Benghazi investigation after the Select Committee was announced in May, Mediaite reported.
