NEW CASTLE, Pa. (AP) - Authorities say a western Pennsylvania police officer shot a pit bull after it bit his partner as the two investigated a burglar alarm.

KDKA-TV reports (https://cbsloc.al/1bkjfxB ) it unfolded Thursday when two Shenango Township officers responded to the alarm.

The officers found a door open with no one home. They went inside to investigate and were met with a dog, which lunged and bit one officer twice in the leg.

Authorities say the partner shot the dog when it came toward him.

The homeowner took the wounded animal to a veterinarian. The officer was taken to a hospital for bite wounds and rabies shots.
