PITTSBURGH (AP) - Powerful storms have swept through western Pennsylvania, knocking out power to thousands of homes and closing several schools.

First Energy has about 5,200 customers without power from Erie to the West Virginia border as of 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Duquesne Light reports less than 2,000 customers in the Pittsburgh area remain off line after Monday night’s storms.

The company expects power to be restored to the majority of its customers by noon.

Propel Braddock Hills Elementary School and Propel Braddock Hills High School were closed due to the outages.

One Pittsburgh police station was operating on a backup generator Tuesday morning.
