HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A review board has cleared a Huntsville police officer of wrongdoing after shooting a woman who shot her estranged husband.

Police say the woman fired a shotgun at her ex-husband on April 19 after he violated a protective order and broke into the house she was staying at. Police say the woman ran to the home’s garage and shot her ex-husband in his chest when he aimed a pistol at her. Police say officers who were called to the scene heard the gunfire.

Authorities say a responding officer told the woman to drop the weapon and fired after the woman pointed the gun in the officer’s direction. The woman was shot in her hip.

The officer’s identity hasn’t been released and authorities say he’ll return to duty.
