BARRE, Vt. (AP) - State officials say the courthouse in Barre will be closed for the rest of the week for testing after low levels of asbestos were found in parts of the building.

The vermiculite insulation was discovered in the ceiling last weekend when ceiling tiles were removed during an electrical work.

Secretary of Administration Justin Johnson said Tuesday that preliminary tests results confirmed that the material contains low levels of asbestos fibers. He says the state needs to test the work areas to determine if the contamination goes beyond the ceiling cavity.

Health Commissioner Harry Chen says there is no indication that employees or visitors have been exposed to asbestos fibers.

Residents who have appointments at the courthouse this week should call the courthouse, state’s attorney’s office or probation and parole office.
