MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - Cobb County prosecutors say a man has been given a 20-year sentence for shooting a police officer in 2013.

District Attorney’s spokeswoman Kim Isaza says 20-year-old Shymel Young pleaded guilty to aggravated assault Tuesday as jury selection was beginning in his trial.

Isaza says Young was being chased by a Cobb County police officer July 12, 2013 and shot Officer Danny Rogers in his torso. Authorities say the bullet pierced Rogers’s bullet-proof vest and Young fled on foot.

Authorities say Young was quickly identified as a suspect and two women he had relationships with provided investigators with details.

Young is ordered to spend 12 years of his sentence in custody.
