REVERE, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts lawyer has been ordered to pay nearly $250,000 for discriminating against Latino homeowners struggling to make mortgage payments.

The Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination has ordered David Zak, a Revere attorney, to pay $233,600 for targeting 17 Latino homeowners with predatory ads for mortgage modifications.

The commission said Zak used Spanish and Portuguese advertisements claiming he could prevent foreclosures and cut mortgage payments in half. The commission said he also claimed to be the only Massachusetts attorney capable of modifying loans.

The state attorney general is also investigating Zak for alleged predatory mortgage-modification services.

Zak was ordered to pay $116,000 in damages to 17 complainants and $107,000 to 12 others. He was also fined $10,000.

Zak tells The Daily Item (https://bit.ly/1ctbq9E ) he denies wrongdoing and will appeal.
