JENNINGS, La. (AP) - The attorney for a Jennings man accused of shooting a police officer has filed an order for appointment of a sanity commission.
The American Press reports (https://bit.ly/1eOXZNb) public defender Joslyn Alex filed papers on April 30 requesting a two-doctor sanity commission conduct a mental health evaluation of her client, 30-year-old George David Lowdins.
Lowdins is charged with attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in August.
Lowdins is accused of shooting Sgt. Ricky Benoit in the neck after police responded to a domestic dispute last June.
He remains in the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail on a $1 million bond.
Lowdins was set for trial May 18 but the matter will be reset pending the issue of a sanity commission.
