FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say nearly 600 students were evacuated from a Fayetteville Christian school when a construction crew severed a gas line.

Multiple media outlets report the students were evacuated from Freedom Christian Academy around 2 p.m. Tuesday. They gathered in a parking lot in an adjacent industrial park.

Fayetteville police say one child became ill during the evacuation, but it’s not known if the child was taken to the hospital.

School officials say students were allowed to return to the school to pick up their belongings shortly after the 3 p.m. dismissal time.

Director of Operations Hall Powers said the construction crew was outside of the building working on an addition to the school’s gymnasium when the gas line was severed. He said no gas got inside the building.
