VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs is suggesting an election be held in January on a local tourism tax to fund a new sports complex.
The Vicksburg Post reports (https://bit.ly/1PgJmrY ) the referendum will be on whether to levy up to a 2 percent sales tax on hotel room rentals and food and beverage sales in the city.
The city has not yet selected a site for the sportsplex. Flaggs says a January date would give officials time to select a location.
The city is looking at 270 acres of land with baseball and softball fields, 15 soccer fields, 10 tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts and a building with indoor pool.
Gov. Phil Bryant recently signed a bill that authorizes the city to levy the tax if voters approve.
