SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The state’s top leaders paid tribute to an Illinois political force by naming a state museum building after Alan J. Dixon.
The family of the longtime state government officeholder and two-term U.S. senator attended the ceremony Wednesday at the museum building in the state Capitol complex.
House Speaker Michael Madigan says Dixon “was just about helping people, helping working people get ahead.”
Dixon began public life as police magistrate in his home of Belleville, then went to the Illinois House in 1950 at age 22. He served in the House and Senate for the next 20 years.
He was state treasurer and secretary of state before winning a U.S. Senate seat in 1980.
Dixon died July 6, one day shy of his 87th birthday.
