MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Officials say a suburban Detroit elementary school has been evacuated after several students became ill.

Macomb County Sheriff Tony Wickersham tells WJBK-TV that emergency crews responded Wednesday morning to Beck Centennial Elementary School in Macomb Township.

The Macomb Daily reports a fog machine that was to be part of musical performance may have malfunctioned. Several ambulances responded.

School officials say that about 10 students were taken to a hospital as a precaution. Tim McAvoy, spokesman for Utica Community Schools, tells The Detroit News the school was evacuated as a precaution. Other students were taken to another school to be picked up by parents.

McAvoy says symptoms appear to be minor and the students are responsive.
