DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A transportation official says he will propose dramatically changing a rural intersection in eastern Iowa where a recent vehicle crash killed five people.

Steve Gent, director of traffic and safety for the state Department of Transportation, says he will suggest removing a curve along Highway 150 near Urbana beginning sometime in 2017. Improved signage will be added in the meantime.

Gent made the pledge Wednesday while meeting with citizens at the Capitol. They submitted a petition to him with more than 1,500 signatures asking for changes.

DOT officials say there have been a few crashes along the curve in Benton County over the years, but a crash in April that killed five people drew new attention.

The plan would cost around $1.5 million. It needs approval from an agency commission.
