ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (AP) - A Franklin County woman faces murder and abuse charges stemming from the death of a 3-year-old boy.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says Hope McVey Perdue is charged with second-degree murder and felony abuse and neglect.

The sheriff’s office said Wednesday in a news release that Perdue’s husband, David Perdue, called 911 at 3:56 a.m. Tuesday and reported that the boy was unconscious and appeared to have been beaten.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His name hasn’t been released.

Police say Hope Perdue left the residence before deputies and an emergency crew arrived. She was found about 12 hours later in a garage at another residence after deputies received an anonymous tip.

Police say Hope Perdue was the boy’s custodial guardian.
