FAIR OAKS, Calif. (AP) - Firefighters have contained a grass fire in Northern California that forced the evacuation of two homes and threatened others in the city of Fair Oaks.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District spokeswoman Michelle Eidam says the fire burned roughly 15 acres.

Eidam tells the Sacramento Bee (https://bit.ly/1PHMwjp) that defensible space was crucial in saving homes near the fire line.

Progress of the fire was buffeted by strong winds on Wednesday afternoon, and forced the use of an air water tanker from the California National Guard.

Eidam says the origin of the fire has not been established but that fire officials say there was suspicious activity in the are before the fire was reported.

She says arson investigators are at the scene.
