LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - The Lafayette Parish School Board approved cutting more than 40 positions in proposed changes in the district’s 2015-16 budget.

The Advertiser (https://bit.ly/1bOJsVl) reports the eliminated jobs include five special education para-educators, eight-and-a-half assistant principal slots, two counselors, three deans of students, three Chinese immersion positions, three instructional coaches and three secretaries among other positions.

It is not clear how many of those jobs are vacant. The district is facing a deficit of about $15 million for next year due to a combination of charter schools, rising health care costs and increasing retirement costs.

Officials say the moves will save the school district about $2.5 million. The proposed budget also includes $2 million in salary increases for both certified and support personnel.

The final budget adoption is scheduled for June 17.
