COLFAX, La. (AP) - The first animal shelter has opened in Grant Parish on the grounds of a local detention center three years after the sheriff’s office started an animal control program.

The Alexandria Town Talk (https://townta.lk/1HcZpQs ) reports a 20-kennel shelter opened this week at the Grant Parish Detention Center. Inmates care for the dogs, walking and feeding them.

Warden Brad Sudduth says it teaches them about responsibility and instills compassion in the inmates.

Officials say the shelter is a continuation of an effort to address the rural parish’s longstanding problem with animal control. The sheriff’s office, police jury and towns all contributed financially to build the facility, which only houses dogs now. Officials are researching the best way to advertise the dogs available at the shelter.
