SILVER CITY, N.M. (AP) - An 85-year-old Pinos Altos woman is facing charges of reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident after hitting a bicyclist who is now in critical condition.

The Silver City Sun-News reports Brian Robinson’s helmet shattered when he and Dorothy Spangler’s 1997 Jeep SUV collided on Sunday.

Two motorcyclists started following Spangler when they noticed there was a bike stuck under her car. The Silver City Daily Press reports Police Chief Ed Reynolds says the driver left the scene and officers tracked her to where the motorcyclists stopped her.

Spangler said she never saw what hit her SUV, which had damage to its windshield, roof and right hand side mirror. She was released from Grant County Detention Center on a $6,000 bond.

Robinson is an orthopedic surgeon and son of Sixth Judicial District Judge J.C. Robinson.
