VINE GROVE, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky State Police have identified a father who they say killed his 11-year-old daughter before turning the gun on himself as a Fort Knox commander.

Multiple news outlets report emergency crews responded to a report of gunshot victims in Vine Grove shortly before 9 p.m. Monday. Officers found the bodies of 49-year-old Lieutenant Colonel John Jonas and his 11-year-old daughter Tasha in the side yard of a home. Neighbors say Jonas was in uniform.

Jonas worked for the Army’s Human Resources Command at Fort Knox. He was a single father and the girl’s mother lived out of state.

Tasha was a fifth-grader at Vine Grove Elementary. Autopsies were completed Tuesday in Louisville. Police say they will release more information about the shooting as it becomes available.
