WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) - Utah prosecutors have refiled 30 of more than 100 drug cases dismissed in 2013 after investigators discovered West Valley City Police mishandled evidence and kept souvenirs from drug busts.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill told The Salt Lake Tribune (https://bit.ly/1E5TW9n ) Tuesday that some cases were refiled after additional evidence or witnesses were discovered. In other cases, prosecutors decided existing evidence was strong enough to again pursue the cases.

West Valley City police announced in 2013 that an investigation uncovered problems with officers in the drug unit.

Eight officers from the unit were put on leave or disciplined, and a ninth officer was fired in the wake of the probe.

West Valley City police Chief Lee Russo says he’s glad the cases will continue but says it doesn’t excuse the officers’ behavior.
