NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Former Texas Tech guard Minta Spears is heading to Vanderbilt as a graduate transfer.

Spears, who is 5-foot-10, has been accepted to graduate school at Vanderbilt and has two seasons of eligibility remaining. Because she’s a graduate transfer, Spears will be able to play for Vanderbilt in the 2015-16 season rather than sitting out a year.

In a school release Wednesday announcing the move, Vanderbilt coach Melanie Balcomb called Spears “the consummate student-athlete” and said she “fills an immediate need at the guard position.”

Spears played 62 games and made 51 starts for Texas Tech over the last two seasons. She averaged 6.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game this past season.

As a redshirt freshman in 2013-14, Spears averaged 8.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists.
